The facility

Nordkalotten (the North Calotte) is the geographic name for the provinces touching the Arctic Circle, including the whole of Norrbotten, Luleå, parts of northern Norway, northern Finland and parts of Russia. As an area, the concept is boundless and the thought was born that this should be symbolised in some way. The idea of a North Calotte centre was born.

Kelo wood

An architect and building materials with links to the region were chosen. Kelo wood was bought from Russia and Finland. The wood from which the hotel is built is estimated to be 700-1000 years old. Kelo wood is formed when a pine tree dies – a chemical process dries the tree and impregnates it. The end result, created by nature itself, is a durable and beautiful building material that is full of character.

Åtta Årstider

The house was built with octagonal rooms and was ready in 1979. The building is based on Sami mythology, with the eight corners symbolising the eight seasons in the old Sami year. The hotel is built on old reindeer pasture and the area has traces of old Sami settlements.

Hotel and conference

During the 1980s and 90s, the activity developed into a full-scale hotel and conference facility. “We work in a house with a soul and atmosphere that leaves no one untouched. The roots in Norrbotten culture and history is in the walls and represent a heritage that we are proud to uphold,” says Robert Sjölund, MD.
